Momentum appears to be growing for finding a way to overcome zoning issues that are delaying more affordable housing through British Columbia, specifically in the Lower Mainland. The latest comments from Housing Minister David Eby are making headlines.
In a report by CBC, the minister said the government is looking at legislation that, if passed, would allow the province to override decisions by municipalities that do not approve affordable housing projects. He said his “sense of urgency” is a reaction to the fact that migration from other parts of Canada is at a 30-year high while vacancy rates — for owning or renting — are at an all-time low.
The CBC story includes a reaction from a UBC professor who teaches the next generation of home buyers.
