As keeping the planet green moves from desirable to necessary, every small improvement helps, even ones like these that you may already know:
• Move away from single-use cleaning cloths, like paper towels, and use washable sponges and cloth rags.
• Turn down the temperature of your hot water tank. The recommended energy-efficient temperature is 120 degrees (F) or 49 (C), because it's hot enough to keep disease at bay, will not cause scalding. Children are especially vulnerable to scalding at the manufacturer’s often-suggested temperature of 140F/60C. Setting the temperature at 120/49 degrees will supply enough hot water for most small families.
• Do laundry in cold water. Detergents work just as well in cold water as in hot, and clothes will not wear out as fast as they do in hot water. Doing laundry at night, or at least after dinner, when the demand for power is much less.
• Clean the lint filter in the dryer before EVERY load. The dryer will operate more efficiently and save energy (also dollars), because built-up lint obstructs air circulation.
• Choose indoor plants that are environmentally friendly…Aloe Vera, Snake Plant, Bamboo Palms and Boston Ferns are especially good at absorbing and retaining chemicals from the air. Not only that…these plants are fairly easy to care for, too.
