How to avoid whining about wine storage

There are friends of Nexus Realty (they shall remain nameless) with an affinity for buying and storing (and yes, consuming) wine. There are likely many such friends of Nexus, but this particular couple has done it all when trying to accommodate a wine collection that at one time was several hundred bottles.
They didn’t buy a house specifically to fit the wine collection, but they did build a room in the basement just for the wine — sorry, kids, no third bedroom. They have tried several wine cabinets over the years and once had clay drain pipes, also known as terra cotta tiles, piled in a crawl space that was full of bottles of wine.
Had they only known.
There are more clever ways to make your home fit your wine. Think about building shelves into a wall that once was home for a favourite painting or picture. They’re called “X” shelves, they’re a perfect fit for those 750-ml bottles and they can also be built into cabinets, or made into cabinets to serve as a room divider, or under a counter top that is just empty space. And they can be X-shaped or square.
The clay pipes work, too, if you want that earthy look, and they can be stacked to fit whatever space you have. Or how about building into that diagonal space under a staircase, a space often used for…whatever you want to hide there?
Unfortunately, the friends of Nexus say they lacked that much imagination or skill, so more than once they opted for the already-built cabinet!
