Explaining terms for different types of homes

In the newsletter subscribers receive every month (News From Nexus), statistics are published from four of the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver areas that we most often serve — West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Vancouver East and Vancouver West.
Within each there are three categories:
• Detached homes
• Attached homes
• Apartments
What are they?
The definition of a detached homes is straight-forward: a house that is not attached to any other property, or a single-family home.
The same for apartments. Pretty straight-forwards, right?
Attached homes is a category that’s a little more complicated because it could mean:
Semi-detached — generally two single-family homes, attached, or a duplex
Condominium — Units in complexes governed by condominium associations, which means rules and regulations, and condo fees.
Townhouses — either “freehold” (you own everything on the property, including the lot) or “condo” (you own everything within the walls and the condominium corporation owns everything else).
