Okay, it’s time for full disclosure.
Hands up if you park your car(s) inside your garage.
Drive around your neighbourhood and see how many two-car garages have two cars parked…in the driveway!
It begs the question: How important are garages?
In real estate listings, the seller almost always points out that a selling feature is the “double garage.”
Buyers who go window shopping almost always are happier when the property they’re looking at has a “double garage.”
And if a house doesn’t have a garage, they’ll often build one.
The fact is, people love garages even when they’re not going to be used for parking cars.
Instead, they’ll be used for storing “stuff.”
That’s what most garages seem to be used for, unless they’ve been converted to rec rooms or rental suites.
Sellers have to clean the garage before putting the property on the market, so that buyers will see there’s indoor space for the cars. But is the new owner going to do what the old owner didn’t do — park in the garage?
Or is having a double garage for cosmetic purposes, so that a house looks good when it goes on the market?
